Hey Kids and Kiddos,
No, this hasn’t become a Blink 182 tribute newsletter (though, should it? hmmm). I want to thank you all for opening this anyway, and indulging me for a few minutes in between scrolls. Sorry, I’ll get to the point, now: We’re opening submissions for our next comic anthology!
From February 14 to May 14 we are accepting submissions for our new anthology, "First Dates”! We're looking for black and white comics about the most stressful and exciting thing in the world: first dates. These could be based on your most memorable first date (the date from hell/the best one ever) or they could be completely fictional! Maybe you want to work in a specific genre (horror, comedy, sci-fi). It's up to you!
Check out all the requirements/details here.
“A good mix tape’ll put you in the right mood!”
Did you know we release cassette tapes? Yes, for over a decade Inservice has been a micro indie label putting out music from the pride of the Canadian prairies, and even though we’ve pivoted pretty hard to comics in the last three years, for some reason we simply cannot stop releasing music! Check out our latest releases here.
Hey, remember that time…?
I’ve made a LOT of stuff over the years, and I want to share some of it here. This is an animated ode to Saturday morning cartoons, “Spring Break” by Winnipeg band The Sorels! I first met the drummer, Jill, back in the 90s when we were going to shows (I used to put her on my shoulders so she could see) and now she’s my hairdresser! I met the singer, Joanne, about 20 years ago working on film sets. You can catch her in a bunch of great films (she’s the bus driver in Nobody that Odenkirk kicks off the bus before he fights all those guys). I still haven’t met the guitarist and I know nothing about her! This video took about a month to make.
Woah, you’re still reading!
I recently launched my black and white daily comic strip, Abigail Anxiety, on all my socials - @nicholastronaut - and Webtoon Canvas! It’s a Peanuts-style strip loosely based on my own childhood anxieties, with a bit of David Fincher darkness. It’s funny, sad, and free on those platforms. This first story arc concludes in May and will then be collected into an 85 page digest size book (because we must continue to make physical things in case these platforms disappear)!
Show Dates
I’m still waiting to hear back on some festival applications, so watch this space in March to see where we’ll be this year!
Really fun First Dates idea!
